Hiroshige Ando Japanese print

This Japanese print was bought by the client from Liberty's in the 1970s but unfortunately was framed in a most in appropriate manner. The delicate Japanese paper was stuck down to the hardboard backing by double sided tape. This caused acidic build up over time which manifested itself as foxing and intense discolouration. The attractive boarder had also been covered up by the mount which was also of inferior quality and acidic. The print was carefully removed from the hardboard and the adhesive tape removed. The print was then washed and bleached to remove the foxing and discolouration. It was then pressed and mounted in a cotton rag mount. We cleaned two prints for the owner who was grateful and appreciative of the restoration of his Japanese prints.
