Pencil and chalk drawing by C Crale "Capellen on the Rhine 1861"

This drawing is a family heirloom but has suffered from extremely poor treatment from several framers. The paper was discoloured by having being glued down to straw board. This made the white chalk highlights appear too prominent. Mat burn was also very prominent around the edge of the mount. The drawing was removed from the strawboard, washed to remove the acidity and staining and a new mount was made using a laser cutter. Although the cost of the treatment outwayed the value of the drawing (no value could be given by the valuer for Master Drawings at Sothebys) the owner is pleased to have had the drawing cleaned and conserved for the future.
