Hogarth Etching
Hogarth's Etching "France" 1756
This etching from the series called France was suffering from foxing and a great deal of photo-oxidation. This can be seen as brown discolouration in the image area and is particularly evident when the print is removed from its old mount. Consevation bleaching removes the discolouration with minimal impact on the paper fibres. Creases were removed and the plate mark was protected by careful pressing. The print was mounted in 100% acid free cotton rag museum board. The cleaning and restoation of prints of this age can be very successful due to the quality of paper and inks used in the 18th century.
