Recent Projects: Antique Fan

Restoration of an antique fan

This antique fan was owned by an antiques dealer who had it in his showroom for several years. It had a broken support and parts of the folding paper fan were missing or had stuck to the next section. Some of the gold leaf was also missing. The manner of damage strongly suggested that the fan was closed too quickly when it was first made and painted. Consequently the folded sections stuck together so that when it was first opened the support broke and the paper fan was torn. Tears were repaired and missing areas were replaced with suitable paper which was then repainted sympathetically in watercolour. The gold leaf was replaced. The metal support was fixed using an epoxy based adhesive. The box was also tidied up. The mother of pearl was cleaned and polished. The owner can now put the restored fan into auction.
